WE PROMOTE STUDIES ON CRITICAL ISSUES FOR THE SOUTHEAST REGION OF BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR, MEXICO, SUCH AS WATER QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY, BIODIVERSITY MONITORING AND CARE, AND THE PRESERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF OUR NATURAL RESOURCES.
We also make this information available to the communities and facilitate meetings with key participants for the implementation of sustainable strategies in the region.
With great pride we announce that our first research paper has been published in 2021, thanks to joint work with the LegacyWorks Group and the International Community Foundation.
This project focused on one of the most critical issues for our region: the availability and quality of fresh water in the four aquifers between San José and La Paz, B.C.S. in the Southeast Region (Los Planes, San Bartolo, Santiago and Cabo Pulmo) also known as the Eastern Cape.
This study is of great importance for this region because the Southeast Region is under pressure to develop large tourist centers and restart mining activities that pose a threat to the availability and quality of water.
To develop the report, an in-depth review and analysis of existing scientific studies and available official information was carried out.
The technical report of this study comprises around 300 pages and is the most complete compendium that exists to date on water for this region.
We also designed and produced a citizen report entitled WATER in the Eastern Cape (Southeast Region), summarizing the most important findings. We are sharing the report in print and digital forms with the different stakeholders.
To bring this information to the communities through the students of the Southeast Region high schools, we developed a Project-Based Learning Curriculum Program focused on water, which is already available on our online Educational Platform. We have shared this material with state teachers through a complete teacher training program given with the Secretaría de Educación Pública de Baja California Sur and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
We are currently producing other digital materials to share this vital information on our social networks as well as printed brochures with specific data by watershed.
Soon BCI will convene a forum with local decision makers, educators, researchers, communicators, and local leaders using this valuable information to motivate the creation of agreements that seek the preservation of the sources of this vital liquid in the Southeast Region.
OTHER CRITICAL ISSUES WE ARE INTERESTED IN RESEARCHING INCLUDE:
Better options for the treatment, desalination, and capture of water for the region.
The economic value of the services related to the ecosystems of the area such as fishing or tourism and the importance of adequate coastal protection.
The definition of sustainable development in the Southeast Region concept.
New models of sustainable tourism that maximize the level of jobs and profits in Mexico.
