WE PROMOTE STUDIES ON CRITICAL ISSUES FOR THE SOUTHEAST REGION SUCH AS WATER QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY, AS WELL AS THE PRESERVATION OF OUR BIODIVERSITY AND NATURAL RESOURCES.

The goal is to make this information available for the communities to create awareness and participation, and promote meetings between key members of this region to implement sustainable strategies for each topic.

The water report was distributed in all the communities of the region.

In 2021, in collaboration with LegacyWorks Group and the International Community Foundation, BCI published the research WATER on the Eastern Cape, Watersheds of Los Planes, San Bartolo, Santiago and Cabo Pulmo, which represents 2 years of investigation and analysis, about the situation of the four watersheds that supply the Southeast Region of the Baja California Península (also known as Eastern Cape).

Expert scientists carried out an in-depth review of existing studies and available official information to produced a 300 page technical report with the most complete compendium on water for this region that exists to date.

This study is of great importance because this region is under pressure to develop large tourist centers and restart mining activities that could pollute and reduce the acces to our already scarce freshwater sources.

To share the key results with residents and stakeholders, we also designed and produced an easy to understand graphic report (in English and in Spanish), summarizing  the most important findings about the availability, quality, concesions granted and projections for the future of our water, as well as pamphlets with specific information for each region to share at the communities, and banners and displays to make presentations at fairs and expos.

Participation at the State of Water Forum of BCS in 2021

Also, through our Education to Action Program we shared this data with local students developing projects around water conservation or research, and created a Project-Based Learning Water Curriculum that was shared with 35 teachers from the region and from all over the state, through a complete training program in alliance with SEP (Public Education Secretariat of Baja California Sur) and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The idea was to ignite more student projects around water and guarantee that this information will reach more families.

Soon BCI will convene a forum with local decision makers, educators, researchers, communicators, and local leaders, using this valuable information, to motivate the creation of agreements that seek the preservation of the sources, and a well planned distribution of water in the Southeast Region.

OTHER CRITICAL ISSUES WE ARE INTERESTED IN RESEARCHING INCLUDE:

  • Better options for the treatment, desalination, and capture of water for the region.

  • The economic value of the services related to the ecosystems of the area such as fishing or tourism and the importance of adequate coastal protection.

  • The definition of sustainable development in the Southeast Region concept.

  • New models of sustainable tourism that maximize the level of jobs and profits in Mexico.
