The southeast region of the Baja California peninsula has been home, for centuries, of small communities of farmers and fishermen who maintained a balance between the use
and conservation of their natural resources.
But with an increasing pressure of new tourism and real estate projects, this region is now the fastest growing area in all of Mexico. Due to this growth and climate change, we are losing biodiversity and access to freshwater.
To make good decisions for our region, is vital to create an environment where there is a sense of belonging, access to scientific information, leadership, community participation, and open negotiations.
To address this, BCI works on 3 lines of action
Research
BCI commissions key scientific studies on relevant topics and makes them accessible to everyone. Our Water on the Eastern Cape Report is the latest one, it was developed with Legacy Works Group and has been presented in community forums and through scholar activities.
Education
In collaboration with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Secretary of Education we launched the Education to Action program in 2018 to offer learning experiences where teachers and students develop leadership skills and use scientific tools to preserve their biocultural heritage.
Communication
Through campaigns, webinars, and live training events, at our Environmental Education Campus in Cabo Pulmo, we facilitate access to scientific information about the importance and fragility of our coastal ecosystems and the best practices to preserve them.
BAJA COASTAL INSTITUTE
Is a non-profit community organization made up of residents of Cabo Pulmo who voluntarily share their time and resources for the conservation of this region. Our goal is to contribute in generating well-informed decision-making communities for a future with equity and inclusion in a healthy environment.
With your support, we can increase our positive impact in this beautiful region.
